BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNCIL (2020 - PRESENT)

'What Impact Could You Have As A Civil Enforcement Officer?'

Being a local government authority, we are often the target of opinionated people - especially online. A Civil Enforcement Officer recruitment campaign was bound to attract attention and comments about issuing parking tickets, so I wanted to focus on the work they do that people don't immediately think of. Interestingly, I also interviewed three CEOS for the campaign, and one quote that resonated is that most residents appreciate the work they do - until they get a ticket.

'Safeguarding Is Everyone's Business'

Artwork for a countywide public engagement campaign for adult safeguarding. I created social media campaign artwork, pull-up banners, leaflets, lanyards, banner pens, business cards and posters, the latter of which, at the time of writing, are dotted around town centres across Buckinghamshire.

Adult Social Care Factsheets

A suite of 30 factsheets created for the public. I developed a pastel colour palette for the entire series in order to differentiate the series in a subtle but accessible way. Using only royalty-free images, I wanted to stray from the typical photos used by social care; hands on shoulders, workers kneeling down to look at frail seniors at eye level, that sort of thing. Instead, I decided to use faces looking at the camera, a more engaging way of representing Buckinghamshire residents.

I also created a 'Fact Sheet' motif based on the idea of a conversation between a social worker and client, and choose a handwritten font to show that the information within is accessible and easy to understand.

Adult Social Care Local Account

As this was the second year of creating this document, I was keen to avoid the pitfalls of last time and have given the 60+ document. some room to breathe, with plenty of white space and repeated colours and motifs throughout. The cover is vibrant yet still tasteful, and the colours flow throughout.

Adult Social Care 'Everyone Matters' poster

A simple, stripped-down poster design putting a twist on the hand motif that has become synonymous with care and health. I stuck a bit more rigidly to the branding with this one and incorporated icons for some visual appeal.

Direct Payments newsletter

As part of my job, I meet with residents and carers to find out what they think of the service they receive. Direct Payment users were particularly vocal about the lack of communication when it comes to different payment options, what they can use their money for and activities or workshops that might be interest to them. With the commissioning team, I designed a newsletter for residents laid out in a more 'traditional' Bucks way, with plenty of images, white space and large type to ensure accessibility for all.

Adults and Health 'Hall of Fame' design

As part of an initiative to reward the efforts of Adults & Health staff during Covid-19, staff were invited to nominate their colleagues for inclusion in a 'Hall of Fame'. I created this relatively simple design, with the blessing of our corporate Design Team, based on blue heritage plaques with incorporation of the laurel wreath. I wanted to evoke a sense of longevity and lineage, in addition to reaffirming that this a 'crowning achievement' of sorts.

Adult Social Care 'Talk Back' poster design

A mix of Swiss design principles, bright colours and an eye-catching visual graphic were used to support the informal, call-to-action wording of this poster. The graphic draws the eye and is a change from the traditional imagery used at local government level, emphasising excitement and a break in tradition.

ASYE induction calendar

The assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE) is a programme that gives newly qualified social workers extra support during their first year of employment. The average age of ASYEs is between 25 and 35, so I wanted to appeal to that audience by creating a vibrant design but more importantly, something familiar. I thought about the look and feel of calendars that this demographic would be used to looking at on their phones or tablets, rather giving them a stuffy Excel spreadsheet to work from.

World Social Work Day & Social Work Week England

Poster created for an important day, week and month in social work the world over. Partially based on the World Social Work Day 'Unbuntu' poster, which the client really liked, but incorporating the council's branding colours and the hilly, green landscape of Buckinghamshire.

QSP Research Bulletin - magazine and logo design

Publication produced for internal use, aimed at professional social care staff. I created each element of the design, from the QSP motif to the layout, choice of photos, typefaces and colours. My intention was to produce something that looked like a professional magazine rather than the usual Word document that gets circulated to staff.

Adult Social Care Careers Advice & Development Service logo and poster design

Branding and launch poster created for a new council service, promoting a new service for employees. I had free reign with this design so created everything from scratch, whittling it down to three designs.

The poster was influenced by the cover of Buzzcocks' seminal punk album 'A Different Kind of Tension'.

iCares newsletter

Monthly newsletter launched in June 2020 containing updates for a new software platform to be used by all adult social care staff across Buckinghamshire. The colour pallete was supplied by our corporate Communications team, leaving me to come up with the layout and look. I wanted to create something that was friendly and playful (to compliment the tone of the newsletter) but also looked futuristic and tech-orientated. This is exemplified by the use of grid patterns, lower case and splashes of colour and a mixture of data symbolism and retro artifacts.

Carers Passport

Mock-up for passport, created for one of the council's commissioned services serving approximately 12,500 carers. The Carers Bucks colour, purple, has been updated with the addition of complementary teal colours and the curves evoke a gentle, caring service.

'Talk Wednesdays'

Poster created for an awareness campaign encouraging staff to speak to one another in person rather than by email. I decided to use a pop art design to attract attention, with bright colours adhering to the former Buckinghamshire County Council colour pallete. The imagery was used to evoke a time where computers didn't exist and the then-new technology involved picking up a telephone rather than typing on a screen.
